Prisoners who have served twenty years

Hugh Doherty

Hugh Doherty is a native of Carrigart, Co Donegal, and is single. Hugh was 25 when arrested in London after the Balcombe Street siege in 1975. He was sentenced to Life imprisonment. Now 45, his experience of the regime in BAtain reflects that of all the Republican prisoners, a regime of 'ghosting' between prisons, arbitrary use of Rule 43 and periods of ill-treatment. Hugh's family still live in Donegal. This week his brother, Pat, has been told he may visit Hugh. It will be the first time the two have met since before Hugh's arrest. Currently Hugh is held in Full Sutton.
